New life for a “Rookie Farmer” …first five years. part 2 Post 49

Starting a Farm for retirement?

With zero experience, no less, lol! This is part two of  the first five years in our lives as “Rookie Farmers”, as we start a hobby farm for our grankids.

Goat Barn Renovation...

This small barn was moved to our property, the second year we lived here. We found it while buying a DIFFERENT small building, on Facebook Marketplace! I’ll never forget seeing that barn, on top of a huge flat bed trailer…coming down our private drive, lol!

Before…

After…

What is a Goat barn...without goats!

By this time, we had twenty chickens, and two barn cats and a dog, lol! Time to get serious!  After learning the basics…we took the plunge!

One goat for each grandchild. Meet Stripey, Rocket and Wally. Lil’ Bit wasn’t in this picture, but she is a sweet and social little goat!

Hayride?

Well you can’t have a hayride if you don’t have a wagon…so let’s find one.  And we did,  on no other than, Facebook Marketplace, lol!

Before…

After a power wash and paint…she’s a beauty!

Halloween Party...

The tradition of a Halloween Party for our grandkids when they were babies…grew into a Halloween Hayride and Carnival, lol!

A potluck barn supper, hot dog bar and carnival games are the new fall tradition.

A spooky hayride around the pasture…

My husband’s real name is “Ken”…so guess who you dress up like for Halloween when your wife finds the perfect costume for her husband? hahahaha!  Yes, that’s me, at 68 years old, dressed as a “wanna be” Barbie, to go with my husband Ken!

We met in high school, in real life, lol.  This year is our 50th wedding anniversary!

Garden Bounty...

The second year growing pumpkins, there was enough to sell on a farm stand out front.

Ken pulled the hay wagon up and we used it to display and sell pumpkins, gourds and fall tomatoes.

By the third year the neighborhood customers bought every thing we had to sell!

Highway...

In the third year, our daughter, Emily, decided to bring our granddaughter Lucy’s horse “Highway” to the farm full time.

We surprised our daughter with a large run-in enclosure for Highway, using our Covid stimulus money and our tax return, lol!

Highway…his attitude is like his name “My way or the Highway”, lol!

He is an escape artist, gate opener, and over all rascal…but we love him!

I’m cleaning the chicken coop and hear rustling, only to turn around and see a giant horse…out of his pasture AGAIN, lol! He about scared the #*%^ out of me, lol!

Lots more ahead...

Well it has been a crazy five years…so much has happened, I barely scratched the surface!

But I’ll wrap it up for this time. Stay tuned for more fun parties, decorating ideas, gardening, farm animals, and more, at Sweet Tea Yankee Farm.

Fondly, Sandy

Hi Carole, It’s hard to keep track of all the chickens when you have over 30, lol.
We do name the chickens that need special care♥️
Thanks for reading our latest post!
